Tis The Sneezin’ – Allergic Rhinitis

Sneezing - Allergic Rhinitis Information

Ahh spring, that time of year, when the earth comes alive with bursts of color, sun filled days, and fragrant breezes. For allergy sufferers spring also brings sneezing, coughing, and itchy, watery eyes. Sound familiar? Allergic rhinitis is the result of your body reacting to allergens found in the air that you breathe. This reaction is brought about by your bodies immunity responding to the invasion of allergens.

Allergens or triggers of allergic rhinitis vary from person to person. Common allergens are as follows:

  • Dust mites
  • Animal dander
  • Mold
  • Cockroaches
  • Pollen produced by trees, grasses, and weeds
  • Environmental triggers i.e. smoke or chemicals

Symptoms of allergic rhinitis also vary from person to person. You may have one or all of the following symptoms:

  • Sneezing
  • Itching of eyes, ears, nose or throat
  • Watery eyes
  • Runny nose known as post nasal drip
  • Other symptoms include: sinus pressure, fatigue, or headaches

What can you do to help reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis?

  • Know your triggers
  • Keep windows and doors shut when pollen counts are high
  • Remove clothing and shower after outdoor activity to remove pollen from skin
  • Vacuum often to keep dust and pet dander down

When to seek help?

  • If symptoms persist
  • If you are unable to determine your allergens or triggers
  • If you have difficulty breathing

So with spring in full bloom and the dog days of summer ahead keep yourself breathing easy by knowing your triggers and managing your environment. Please consult your physician before starting any over-the-counter treatments.
